Traffic & Transport

As residents know, the streets of our community are subject to significant amounts of traffic making shortcuts between the main access routes in Headington.

Traffic in Headington has been increasing with the development and expansion of Hospitals, Schools and Colleges as is evident from extensive monitoring carried out in 2004.
In 2007 HRA started to campaign for measures to be taken to stop the increasing flow of this traffic through our streets.

A group of residents came together and formed a Traffic Group to develop campaigning and events the impact was having in our streets.  From this, what is now known as the Events Group, starting with temporary closure of traffic by holding Street Events from which our Annual Street Parties were born.

After years of campaigning the traffic issue in Highfield was finally acknowledged in 2010 with funding made available for the introduction of Traffic calming features across the area.
Unfortunately, part way through, the works were stopped due to local authority financial problems.

The one tangible result has been the chicane at the Lime Walk/All Saints Rd junction which works quite well in making crossing by pedestrians safer. However, when there appears to be no other cars in the street a growing number of drivers simply use it to make fast driving more exciting and a challenge.

The Residents Association decided in 2024 to purchase Telraam Devices so we can monitor and understand how the traffic flows, the speed, its volume and its effect across the community.

It was felt that collecting our own data by approved methods means that future discussions with the Traffic Planners will give us legitimate claims about traffic impact now. It will show how it is having a Bigger Impact Now especially with fast and aggressive driving.

Reconsider car use?
You may be wondering whether car ownership is really essential, or if you have two cars, would one suffice? In either case, might the Co-wheels car club be a practical step for you? There are some cars in our area but also some cars just outside the area – see the map and see their promotions
